Employer Bulletin April 2024

This Bulletin is part of an ongoing series by Kraeber Law Office to provide helpful hints about developments in the law that could be relevant to your business.

DID YOU KNOW?

1. New Paid Sick Leave Law Reminder

Don't forget on January 1st the paid sick leave law increased the paid time off to 5 days or 40 hours, whichever is greater. And there are some rare instances in which employees are entitled to more. No doctor's note can be asked for during this protected time off (and your employee handbook should so state).

2. Rounding Time

Simple. Don't do it.

3. Class Actions

We have seen a large increase in class action lawsuits and PAGA (Private Attorneys General Act), both of which can be financially devastating. If you don't have an arbitration agreement, we should discuss what they do and do not cover.

4. Meal Breaks Audit

You should review your policies and procedures related to meal and rest breaks. See No. 3 above. Audit your pay practices to ensure meal breaks are being taken and that premium pay is provided when meal breaks are not taken.
